The West wall of the living room may need more insulation. Vegetation that shades the wall on the outside can help in energy savings.
You may want to buy a non-contact thermometer(with laser beam aiming). It will have many uses in the home. Check the temp of the West wall in several places while the sun is bearing down on it. Hot spots will indicate where more insulation or more shade is needed. Test the temperature of your circuit breakers in the electrical panel. Hot breakers may help you spot electrical waste. Hot wall recepticles indicate a bad connection. etc.
