In my continued effort to improve my technology skills, I recently used an online Microsoft Training on Access 2003. The website included a 35-45 minute training session with three lessons focusing on the following goals:

The difference between a database and a list.

Tables, fields, records, and primary keys.

Four main items, called objects, that most databases contain.

One of the main features that was very helpful was the sample database that the training allows you to explore. The sample got me thinking about other ways I could incorporate the use of a database to help store records and increase my efficiency at using them for various tasks. I also liked that you had the option to turn off the sound during the training and just read the text only. Although there were sponsored links on the side of the page, they were not distracting. At the end of the training (or the right sidebar) you could access a quick reference card that gave a summary of the training information.

After I completed the lesson, I felt like I could have used more information on queries, reports and forms. There was not too much detail about the design process rather; it was just showing what they looked like in Access 2003. I imagine if I spent more time looking on the main Microsoft site, I would have found more in-depth training on the topics.

Overall, I would highly recommend this site for users who want to get started with database design.

About two years ago, we got our first puppy for our family. What a great idea, right? Wrong! We were totally ill-prepared for the responsibility. I often joke that we should have just had a 3rd child. If you’ve had a dog that was unruly in every way possible, then you can begin to feel our pain about our dog.

Fast forward to two weeks ago and we’d pretty much given up on our dog ever getting better. Like some sort of sign, we saw a van advertising BarkBusters in our area, so I decided to check them out online. I gave them a call and was skeptical. We spoke over the phone and was cautiously optimistic, but at this point I was willing to try anything.

Fast forward to two hours ago and I’m sold. I could not believe the progress he made in such a short amount of time. We also learned so much about our dog. One our main concerns was his bolting out the front door. Now that we have the tools, we are making progress on eliminating this bad habit all together. People that know our dog will never believe the transformation. All I can say is we are completely amazed by the initial transformation.

We’ll see what it’s like in a few weeks. I’m still cautiously optimistic, but we have a lifetime guarantee for anytime that we need help. If you have an unruly dog, I encourage you to take their behavior quiz. It will give you an idea of what kind of help your family may need. I’m eager to give updates on our dog’s continued progress.

I’ve given in to peer pressure and have entered a new world. World of Warcraft that is. I see this as an opportunity to spend more time with my spouse. Or maybe more fights, who knows.

So I’ve been playing for about 2 months now and have made one of my resolutions for the year to get one character to level 70. So far, my closest character is a level 40 gnomish rogue. My husband went ahead and bought me the expansion pack, so I’m also working on a blood elf rogue.

Because I probably won’t blog much about my characters, go check out Hynjoku’s site. Lots of fun things to read there about WOW.

I should have known there was going to be an issue when I immediately agreed to split the cost of the guitar and game with my oldest son. My addiction did not start out right away. We had to take turns with 8 people, so I didn’t get to play much. Then I noticed a change when I wanted to play as soon as the kids went to bed. Now it’s a full blown addiction since I’m dreaming about it in my sleep. I know I’ve got issues b/c now as soon as I look away from the screen, things are still moving. There are other signs as well:

Playing nonstop for 90 minutes (I’m an old lady, trust me that’s a long time to play)

Telling my husband “Just one more song, I promise.”

“I’ll go fix dinner as soon as I finish my encore.”

As with any game there are negatives. We don’t have a 2nd guitar yet to play against each other since they won’t be available until the end of January. (We have the Wii.) I would also like to see them make a left-handed guitar, (not in the plans yet according to the web) so we don’t have to switch back and forth just for me. Also just doing the lefty flip doesn’t help when it comes to the whammy bar.

It’s really time for me to go back to work, so I won’t start playing as soon as I wake up in the morning.

Let me clarify — I really did enjoy this movie, but there’s no way I could have made it through without rewind. Had I been with my husband at the theater, we would have walked out because of all the questions I had during the movie.

All in all, a good flick, but make sure you’re ready to pay attention. It’s not just a sit-and-get kind of movie. It reminds me of Babel or Crash in that if you miss one thing, you’re not going to understand the end at all.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite shows on HGTV. They’ll definitely get you inspired to think about sprucing up your own living space.

Curb Appeal
Every time I watch this show, I want to go to a home improvement store. One of these days, I AM going to paint the exterior of the house and get new grass.

Design on a Dime
This show has great ideas for a great price. It really is a matter of just putting in the effort and taking a risk.

House Hunters
Not really a get excited to change stuff show, but very entertaining. I’m always so surprised at how much people can afford for houses. Another surprise is how much people spend on places with one bathroom, no garage, etc.

Mission: Organization
People that know me aren’t shocked when I tell them about this show. I love all of the bins and such they suggest for storage. I like their approach of categorizing things by importance and giving away items to charity.

I Netflixed it that day and finally got around to watching it last night.

This is a great film! The film had a very simple idea; talk to people who’ve helped make changes in the world and figure out a way to make a better world for our children. Okay, not so simple, but a great message.

The DVD also includes a list of organizations that are working toward this goal, including The Nobelity Project.

Anyway, I own a Kirby and it really a great job with cleanup, but it is sometimes really cumbersome. While at Home Depot for our weekly visit (only kidding), I went to look at spot cleaners. They had the Bissell Spot Bot, which looked very cool, but it was listed at $70. No way could I come home with a purchase like that. Apparently though it was my day to find a bargain. I picked up a Dirt Devil Spot Scrubber SE2800 on sale for $20 (regularly $30 and at some places online up to $35).

I’ve read other reviews that didn’t have a lot of good stuff to say, but my experience was great. Cleaning it afterward was not bad at all. The clean water and dirty water stay separate. That’s nice, especially since the water coming out was a nasty shady of yuck. I used it in my car and then tried a spot in my room that’s been there for a while and it worked. I’m sure there are better products out there (that Spot Bot looked sooooo cool), but for the price, I’ll take it.
